MONTEREY, Calif. — October 29, 2026. A fire-prevention nomination focused on Old Capitol Site Park gives Glenwood residents a concrete local item to watch in Monterey’s 2026 neighborhood-improvement process. The proposal, GW-01, asks the city to clear brush and debris at the park to reduce potential fuel hazards for four adjacent neighborhoods.
A park-specific request, not an active-fire announcement
The nomination addresses preventive maintenance in and around a particular open-space area. Its goal is reducing combustible vegetation near established residential neighborhoods. It does not document a wildfire occurring at Old Capitol Site Park, nor does the city packet list a confirmed contractor or cleanup date.
Why the project may be combined
City staff advise merging GW-01 with the broader MN-02 Multi-Neighborhood Fuel Reduction request. The larger proposal would include removing fallen trees, cleaning underbrush and identifying unhealthy trees across multiple forested properties. Staff did not assign GW-01 its own preliminary dollar figure in the latest listing. That omission matters: the Glenwood project cannot responsibly be described as a separately awarded grant.
What happens next for this neighborhood?
The NCIP Committee has a November 18 project-ranking meeting on its calendar. Glenwood neighbors can examine the city packet for GW-01 and ask how a merged citywide project would preserve specific work at Old Capitol Site Park. Decisions on funds, boundaries and implementation remain pending.
Official record: City of Monterey, NCIP Committee October 28, 2026 second-review agenda packet, project GW-01 (PDF). The city lists November 18, 2026 NCIP project ranking as an upcoming committee meeting. Cost figures are preliminary estimates, not awarded funding.
